The optimal age for the introduction of dairy products is 11 months of age. However, specialized baby yoghurts can be given from as early as seven months, as they are adapted to the needs of the immature body, contain a minimum amount of cow’s milk protein and are additionally fortified with calcium, zinc and magnesium. Do not buy low-fat yogurts, they are devoid of valuable substances and are not suitable for young children. Unfortunately, if the baby is allergic to cow’s milk, the introduction will have to be postponed until better times. As a rule, an undesirable reaction disappears with age.

Yogurt for a baby – controversial points

There is an opinion that yogurt can be harmful for crumbs with lactase deficiency. This is a myth – the amount of milk in it is minimal, and lactose is partially destroyed turning into glucose and galactose. The ability to harm is justified only during improper storage. The product remaining after consumption should be disposed of immediately, and after damage to the packaging, stored for no more than an hour at room temperature or three hours in the refrigerator. The fears associated with the indication of a long shelf life on the packaging are also unfounded, this food is based on beneficial, acidic bacteria that do not allow harmful substances to develop, even without the addition of preservatives. Another situation, expired, in this case, the reaction of a small stomach can be unpredictable.

When starting an acquaintance, remember that you need to introduce yogurt gradually, starting with one teaspoon per day. If the baby refuses a healthy dessert, add fruit puree. During the introduction, other new dishes are excluded, this will determine if there is an allergic reaction, which is manifested by indigestion, colic or skin rashes. Suspecting an allergy, yogurt should be removed from the diet and consult a pediatrician.
