The timing of a child’s first shoe is still a matter of controversy. Among pediatricians and orthopedists, the two theories oppose each other. Some recommend learning to walk in a traditional model with arch supports, others advise taking the first steps in socks with non-slip soles.
When to buy baby’s first shoes
You can think about buying only after the first independent steps. At this time, the muscular apparatus is ready to accept the first shoes, which serve as an addition to walking, and not as a permanent basis. If there are no problems with muscle tone and the structure of the foot, shoes are worn only on the street, and at home the child should run barefoot or in anti-slip socks.
The first shoes for a child are new and of high quality.
The consequences of the wrong choice are long-term. The complex structure of the legs, which consists of 26 bones, 32 muscles, tendons and about 100 ligaments, must work in concert. If you choose a poor-quality option, this will lead to the fact that the weight is distributed incorrectly on the sole of the crumbs, an incorrect walking style is formed, which in turn increases the risk of developing scoliosis and back pain. The same applies to shoes that have already been worn. A supported model adapts to the previous owner, and the next owner’s leg may take on the wrong structure. The idea of replacing an old insole with a new one does not eliminate the risk – the shape of the first shoe changes not only in the sole area.
How to choose your first shoes
Measure the length of the child’s foot with a centimeter and go with him to the store. An online purchase is not suitable here, since different manufacturers have a dimensional grid that differs from the standards. It is better to choose a suitable size according to the insole, it should be 0.5 cm larger than the size of the leg. Pay attention to the structure. Instep supports are welcome, a high and tight back supporting the leg in the correct position. The tight back will protect from dislocation in case of an unsuccessful fall. Other important points:
- round toe that allows free movement of the toes
- flexible sole at the beginning of the foot, and dense in the middle
- medium stiffness of the material – too stiff will make it difficult to move
- leather or made of modern breathable materials (Gore-Tex or SympaTex) – will allow the skin to breathe and protect against the development of pathogenic organisms
- fastening method – metal fasteners and laces will discourage the baby from the desire for self-service, there is nothing easier and better than Velcro fasteners.
To choose the right model, ask the child to run and sit down, paying attention to his movements. If the baby is uncomfortable, he will twist the leg or refuse the next steps.
