Is your child refusing to go to school? This is not necessarily a sign of laziness. This is how school phobia manifests itself. Unlike laziness and fatigue, neurosis can be accompanied by vomiting, fever, headache and diarrhea.
Neurosis in a schoolboy
School phobia is one of the neuroses associated with the educational environment, demands and responsibilities. If a child feels unwell every day before going to school, pretends to be sick and looks for an excuse to stay at home, this is a warning sign.
This behavior between the seventh and tenth year of life means that the child is comprehended by a paralyzing fear of leaving home – a safer harbor.
Most children get used to fear and anxiety, but there are children who cannot tame their feelings.
Neurosis develops slowly. And imperceptibly for parents, it develops into a real phobia. Its essence is a complete refusal (as well as physical impossibility) to attend school.
Protests first appear after a long vacation, illness, or stressful events (for example, after a move).
Contributing factors to neurosis:
- teacher’s negative attitude
- emotional disorders
- speech disorder, dyslexia, disability
- financial difficulties
- stressful events: loss of a beloved pet, loss of a loved one, change of residence or school institution.
Diagnosis of school neurosis
The most prone to neurosis are first-graders and teenagers. Ailments pass in a few hours if the student was allowed to stay at home.
If asked why the child does not want to go to school, he can give a number of excuses, for example, difficult lessons, teacher injustice, lack of understanding in the children’s team.
Ignoring or minimizing the problems voiced is a bad decision that leads to an exacerbation of symptoms.
In addition, school phobia requires the intervention of a specialist, since physical symptoms can indicate other diseases. If the pediatrician has not found another disease, the disorder is treated by a psychologist.
The most common physical symptoms are:
- abdominal pain
- headaches and dizziness
- nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
- accelerated heartbeat
- increase in body temperature.
How to distinguish stress from laziness
A child suffering from school neurosis tries by all means to obtain the consent of his parents to miss classes, even if he is a diligent, obligatory student and is distinguished by curiosity.
Health problems are temporary and appear before attending an educational institution, ailments, as a rule, disappear during the weekend or when you manage to avoid going to school.
If a student is not interested in school, he will not be afraid of visiting her, most likely, he will leave the house and just skip classes, carefully hiding this fact from his parents.
In addition, he will not refuse to meet friends, while a child suffering from a phobia avoids communication.

The most effective way to help a student find a healthy mind is to talk to him about his problems, perhaps he has set himself a high goal that is not so easy to achieve.
Visit a psychologist and, if necessary, a neurologist. Both specialists will tell you what actions will help restore and strengthen the nervous system.
