Instead of a crib: 10 replacement ideas

A baby crib is at the top of the shopping list for a newborn, usually the choice falls on a traditional crib that will last for several years. However, this is not the only option for a bed.

Advantages of custom cribs

Usually they are a cozy nest where the newborn will feel extremely comfortable. Such a place to sleep can serve as a main or additional to a classic bed.

A small bed can be placed in a limited area, such as in the kitchen when mom is preparing dinner. Thus, the main advantages are closeness to parents, comfort for the child and saving space in the room. Regardless of the choice, it is important that the place to sleep is not only cozy, but also safe.

1. Basket of Moses

Most often, this is a wicker basket with or without a rack, which is easily installed in any desired location. The basket does not take up much space, wicker baskets made of wood and plastic are available. Retractable hood made of natural material. The cradle is designed for children up to the 4th month of life.

2. Wicker basket

The wicker basket is deeper than Moses’ basket. There is no folding hood, it is most often sold with a stand on wheels, there are also portable options with handles on the sides.

3. Hanging cradle

The suspended cradle is attached to the ceiling or to the top of the structure – a stand, which is more convenient and safer. The cradle with a stand can be easily moved from one room to another and takes up no more space than a standard crib. The cradle can be made of wood or plastic, oval or rectangular in shape.

An interesting solution was proposed by the Hungarian designer Oscar Vagy, his hanging cradle is made only from natural fabrics – wood, felt, wool and leather, however, a baby no older than 2 months will sleep in it.

4. Cocoon for newborns

This is a cozy place to sleep imitating mother’s tummy. Soft edges made of natural fabric limit the space of the child, and the cocoon itself is very comfortable and easy to carry. The cocoon is more like a mattress sewn into an oval shape, which will serve the child up to the 3rd month of life. A warm nest can be placed anywhere – on a parent’s lap, in a crib and stroller, in an adult’s bed.

5. Side bed

This solution is extremely convenient for breastfeeding mothers. The crib allows the mother to feed the baby without getting out of bed, and also to rock him with an outstretched hand, one side of it is without a wall. Easily adjustable in height.

6. Travel crib for a child

The shape resembles a traditional children’s bed, but it is made of a different material. Its walls are made of mesh, which is fastened with a zipper on one side so that a baby over 6 months old can freely leave it. The design is quite light, some models have wheels on legs. It can also be used as an arena.

7. Cardboard crib for a newborn

This offer is for those who appreciate ecological solutions. The crib is made from non-toxic, environmentally friendly and recyclable materials, namely cardboard. Although cardboard seems unsafe, it is quite stable. The cardboard bed is easy to fold, does not take up much space and can replace a travel crib. Suitable for babies up to three months old.

8. Finnish box for kids

It is in these boxes that Finnish parents who have taken place receive assistance from the state (a set of children’s clothes, a pacifier, a bottle, etc.). An empty box of bright colors, parents use as a crib up to six months.

9. Hammock

The material of the hammock adapts to the shape of the newborn’s body, providing a physiological position. The hammock is sold on a special stand, which ensures the safety and easy movement of the bed.

10. Parents’ bed

Many parents still choose this option, there is nothing wrong with it, just a few important rules to remember. Children cannot sleep with their parents if they smoke, are under the influence of alcohol, sedatives, or are overweight.

The child should sleep on a firm mattress in the supine position, he should not be put to sleep on a pillow, blanket, on the edge of the bed. In addition, you should use a cocoon or create boundaries between the child and parents, for example, using cardboard. An adult bed can be dangerous – there is a high risk of suffocation.
